Is judging a book by its cover the same as judging a movie by its actors?
I know I probably shouldn’t do it but it’s a trust thing, you know some actors constantly pick great films while others can get a little alternative which either leaves you feeling cultured or confused, not to name names (George Clooney).
With that in mind I couldn’t help but notice Rialto has been collecting a rather spunky list of leading men that has in turn had me watching a lot of great Rialto flicks so I thought we’d do a quick round up of Rialto’s Top Five marvelous movie men…
1. Sam Worthington in Drift
From Avatar to Clash of the Titans, Sam has exploded onto the big screen as a leading man but in this film he takes a small step back. The spotlight is shared between him and two other Aussie hunks, Myles Pollard and Xavier Smauel. Based on true events it tells story of the birth of Australia’s surf industry. It even has our own Robyn Malcolm in it!
“Set in a remote town on Australia’s spectacular and rugged coastline in the early ’70s, Drift tells the story of two brothers at the genesis of the modern surf industry.
Determined to escape a life of factory work and petty crime, headstrong older brother Andy (Myles Pollard) and his wayward surf prodigy younger brother Jimmy (Xavier Samuel) form a volatile alliance. With their seamstress mother Kat (Robyn Malcolm) they fashion custom-made Drift wetsuits and new shorter surfboards out of their back yard garage.”
2. Paul Rudd in Prince Avalanche
He’s done so many great movies – Anchorman 1 & 2, The 40 Year Old Virgin, Forgetting Sarah Marshall… but I’ll always hold a special place in my heart for when I first saw him as the geeky step brother in Clueless.
I haven’t seen Prince Avalanche yet but I’m booking in a date with my couch this week, can’t wait!
‘’In 1988, an odd pair of sorts, meditative and stern Alvin (Paul Rudd) and his girlfriend’s brother, Lance (Emile Hirsch), dopey and insecure, leave the city behind to spend the summer in solitude repainting traffic lines down the center of a country highway ravaged by wildfire. As they sink into their job in the remarkable landscape, they learn more than they want to about each other and their own limitations. An unlikely friendship develops through humor and nasty exchanges, leading to surprising affection.’’
3. Garrett Hedlund in On the Road
Remember this guy from Tron? I can’t say I did until I googled him but he’s a total cutie and this film had been on my radar for a while, mostly because of K Stew but I’m more than happy to be re-introduced to Garrett.
The movie is based on the acclaimed book and boasts an impressive ensemble cast including Amy Adams, Kirsten Dunst, Terrence Howard and Elisabeth Moss.
“Young writer Sal Paradise has his life shaken by the arrival of free-spirited Dean Moriarty and his girl, Marylou. As they travel across the country, they encounter a mix of people who each impact their journey indelibly.”
4. Zac Efron in Liberal Arts
To be honest Zac is just bait here as he plays a pretty small role but he’s funny and it worked, right! The leading man is Josh Radnor and what is interesting is watching Elizabeth Olsen, it’s a strangely familiar feeling (because of all my days watching her sisters on Full House I guess) but I’ve never seen HER act before. I like!
“When 30-something Jesse returns to his alma mater for a professor’s retirement party, he falls for Zibby, a college student, and is faced with a powerful attraction that springs up between them.”
5. Robert Pattinson in Cosmopolis
This was his first big step away from the Twilight saga and the Edward we all loved and treasured so it was great to see him put on his big boy pants and leap into the wide world. This film had mixed reviews but I thought it was an interesting ride.
“Directed by David Cronenberg, the film follows Eric Packer (Pattinson) in the not-too-distant future as he’s chauffeured through Manhattan on his way to get a haircut. His entire world is falling apart — his marriage is failing, his financial status is slipping and even his very life is being threatened.”
