We’ve been soul sisters since we met in primary 20yrs ago (god that makes me feel old) and now this life long buddy of mine has just started the exciting although sometimes torturest journey of organising her wedding.

I am not the girl that has been dreaming about her wedding day since I was a kid, but definitely liked the idea of being married one day. However I always knew that when I did tie the knot, I wanted it to be a little different .
After attending more weddings than your average celebrant and having the pleasure of being a bridesmaid many times (possibly too many, I was starting to get a little worried there) I’m over whelmed with ideas and quite unsure about what I want for my own wedding.
You can see where I’m coming from, and why I might shy away from tradition .. just take one look at my parents on their wedding day.
My Mum, the local beauty queen fell for my dad , the town’s bad boy and two weeks later they were engaged. Pretty rock ‘n’ roll for small town NZ and like a lot of quickie marriages the relationship didn’t last, but the thing I love about these photos are that they both look so effortlessy cool and relaxed and obviously this day was only about cementing their love for each other and not about anything else i.e. do the serviettes match the table cloths.
Which kinda makes me wonder, should we really spend that much money on one day and do we have to invite my uncles- brothers- cousins girlfriend?
But the honest truth is I DO want a wedding, I do want a white dress and I definitely want my friends and family there so, we’ve made the first step and set the date!
Now the next major thing we have to decide is where are we going to have it. See I am an Aucklander that moved down to Taupo for love therefore most of my friends are in the 09. My Mr is an Aucklander that moved to Taupo ‘just cause’ so all his family are also in the big smoke – but to throw something more into the mix – my family are based in Taupo, Hawkes Bay and the Waiarapa. Therefore the location has me stumped.
Do I make things easier on myself and hold it in Taupo? Do I make things easier on the majority of the guests and hold it in Auckland OR do I make things easier for my family and hold it in the Hawkes Bay? GAH. This is where I envy Mum & Dads balls to the wall ‘lets just do this’ mind set
Not only do I have the whole location thing to think about but I have a fiance who, like myself, shy’s away from tradition. His request is simple (in his eyes) “I just want something really different”. OK – can I have a “sounds like” or “starts with the letter”?. No, I didn’t think so. So now I need to pull a rabbit out of a hat and then present back to his majesty because you can bet your bottom dollar he aint lookin.
Fast Forward 2 weeks of fumbling around in my magical top hat, I think I’ve now narrowed it down to a few places that offer something a little special.

The Redwoods, Rotorua
All Twilight fans will see where I’m going with this. This is different right? Have you ever been to a wedding in a forest? I haven’t, and believe me when I tell you, I have been to a lot of weddings.

Mantells on the Water, Auckland
Ooh lala, I’ve been to Mantells at Mt Eden and I love the rustic yet luxurious style of Mantells – they do it and they do it well, and I am loving the backdrop of the Harbour Bridge and being close to water sans messy sand.

Dunalistair House, Taupo
This is special – a private house for a much more relaxed style wedding. BYO caterers and basically everything you need. Offers luxurious accommodation and the ability to really personalise our day.
The thing with Dunalistair is that it will need to be an intimate wedding as it only states 50 people however upon contacting them Alistair the owner advises they will accept more guests upon application. Hmmmm would have to think about the guest list – but that’s a different blog.

The Old Church, Hawkes Bay
Slightly heading to a more traditional style but would be great for photos and backdrop – PLUS my very sweet mother-in-law to be is Catholic and she would be totes down with the whole church theme.

I can see something special in each venue, the hard part now is to convince Mr Difficult that one of them has what he’s looking for.
