Last Thursday 11th October, I attended the inaugural evening of the novel 11-week series, Food & People with my good friend, The Kitchen Collective‘s Lauren Matthews. Besides good food and good people, we weren’t too sure what to expect, especially in terms of the ‘best’ time to arrive. Lauren was keen to be there at 7.00 on the dot, and for the reason that I am quite easily persuaded when it comes to food, we may or may not have been fashionable, but we were definitely not late.
Luckily I had listened to Lauren – by the time we arrived at 1885 Britomart, at precisely 7.02pm, as Lauren maintains, most of the tables were taken, and there was quite a crowd happening. With the buzz of excitement in the atmosphere, we made our way towards the bar and ordered some drinks.
As the food menu was too enticing and since I am most definitely the most indecisive person in the world, Lauren and I ordered every dish on the menu. On the plus side, it was simply delicious and all up, only cost $25 for all four dishes. Score.
We had a chat with co-creaters Tim Lambourne and Connor Nestor before nabbing a spot where we enjoyed the music and other friends at the event. At 8.15, Tim took to the stage with one of New Zealand’s favorite power couples, fashion designer Karen Walker and creative director Mikhail Gherman. A brief discussion of their favorite cuisines lead to a bunch of laughs, and there was a very comfortable feeling within the room, just like at an authentic dinner party.
This coming Thursday, Simon Pound, Simon Farrell-Green, and Murray Bevan will be co-hosting the evening, which will no doubt be very intriguing. See you all there.
