Earlier this month, it was formally announced that French fashion designer Nicolas Ghesquière would be departing the helm of the influential fashion house, Balenciaga, after a 15-year tenure at the label. After the fashion populaces, worldwide, recovered from this news, a rumour appeared that Christopher Kane may succeed Ghesquière. Whilst many thought this would be a perfect fit, Kane denied reports of such an outcome. Now, recent news appears from a source from Paris “with knowledge of the discussions”, The New York Times’ Cathy Horyn reports, that Alexander Wang may be the prime candidate for the position as creative director.
Whilst the fit may seem unusual at first, it does make sense. Since Wang launched his first full collection in 2007, the 28-year old mastermind has grown from strength to strength. Evidently, Wang’s forms are entirely disparate from those of Ghesquière’s – Wang being more urban, contemporary, trendy, and experimental, and Ghesquière being more feminine avant-garde, defined, and unambiguous – which could be a great revolution for the fashion house, founded in 1914 by Cristóbal Balenciaga. Adding to the corroboration, both fashion houses are owned by French company, PPR.
It is expected that a formal announcement confirming the reports will be released next week, however, neither a representative for the designer nor the fashion house has been able to be contacted. Meanwhile, fashion aficionados eagerly anticipate the outcome.
