Vera Wang Is Sorry She Got Caught
Last week a Chinese newspaper reported that Vera Wang bridal boutique in Shanghai was charging 3000 yuan ($482 american dollars) for a 90 minute try on session. An astronomical sum that raised questions about classism and basically made Vera Wang look like a first class snob. As the cut reports,
It is not unheard of for designer stores in China to charge a modest sum for try-on sessions, supposedly to dissuade counterfeiters from “looking at” tons of dresses for knockoff purposes. Although 3,000 yuan is unusually high.
Can you imagine paying $576 nzd to try on a bunch of dresses that you may or may not buy? And, if you did decide to buy, that is an extra sum ON TOP of the already huge price tag. However as of yesterday Vera Wang “upon careful investigation and review of the policies of our international operators” is dropping the fee. She told WWD,
We wish for all Vera Wang customers to enjoy the same standard of excellence worldwide. Treating our customers in a fair and equitable way remains a priority.
Well that is all well and good but what if the initial report in the Chinese newspaper not been published? Would Vera Wang have changed a thing? Because lets get real for a moment, to people who can afford to buy a Vera Wang wedding dress, $482 is just pocket money.
