Carrie vs Carrie

Have any of you watched The Carrie Diaries? Chances are that if you have, you won’t be doing it again. It is, to put it lightly, boring. There is none of the spark that Sex and the City had, and while we can appreciate that The Carrie Diaries is not trying to be Sex and the City, we are not really sure what it is trying to be.

The problem is (other than the fact that it is on the CW and thus incapable of being sexy) that AnnaSophia doesn’t seem very Carrie Bradshaw to us. Yes she is cute, relatable and basically the only good thing about The Carrie Diaries but we still cannot imagine this family orientated, mothering young girl growing up to become the writer of a column named ‘Sex and the City’.

Candace Bushnell however can’t understand why The Carrie Diaries is such a ratings flop and thinks that Anna Sophia makes for a brilliant young SJP,

I love AnnaSophia. She just holds the screen. She’s a very cool girl in person. I think that comes through. That’s something that’s key to Carrie. Carrie has to be cool.

She channels Carrie from Sex and the City as well. Sometimes I’m just taken aback. Like, wow, that is in a sense a young Sarah Jessica Parker. I know we think of a young Sarah Jessica Parker as very different, because she was in Square Pegs. But if Sarah Jessica Parker had played a 16-year-old Carrie Bradshaw, I see the connection.

This is true actually, she does have these moments of SATC Carrie-ness from time to time but when it happens you are taken aback because it is completely different to what she is like the majority of the time. Maybe it’s just because we grew up watching Sex and the City, obsessively relating every relationship we had with Carrie and Big’s, but in the battle of the Carrie’s Sarah Jessica Parker’s version wins hands down.

Sorry CW but we just don’t buy it.
