Nicktoons IRL
Remember the days you used to race home from school dump your bag, tell your parents you had no homework and plonk yourself down in the living room (with snacks of course) ready to watch the best two hours of TV known to man? Or gladly getting up at 7am on Saturday morning to do the same? Time of your life right?
Just the other day I turned 23 and like any true millennial contemplating growing up, I sank into a pit of nostalgia. I’m not kidding, in the week since I aged another year I have had a brief encounter with cargo pants (my trouser of choice in the late 90s) watched 5 episodes of The Weekenders, 3 of Hey Arnold and 1 of Doug, brought Looms which are like the modern day Scoobies (which I wore in my hair) and contemplated getting a Peter Pan tattoo to signify the fact that I never want to grow up.
It’s been a real trip you guys, I have learnt many things like re-watching cartoons when you’re older and wiser(?) makes you realise there were a lot of things you missed back then; the makers obviously have a ball putting subtle adult jokes in the dialogue. It also makes you appreciate how awesome your favourite characters really were and, if you are anything like me, wonder what they would be like IRL:
Reggie Rocket (The Rockets)
Nike bra, Citizens of Humanity Pants, Ray Bans, Chucks
Reggie would totally be that semi-normcore girl who manages to look nonchalant in a nike sports bra when she’s not even doing sports and when it’s cold out. But then again she’s never not doing sport and lives in Hawaii so..
.
Nikki Little (Pepper Ann)
ACNE Jumper, APC Coat, Comme Socks, Zara Skirt, Churches Shoes, Cambridge Satchel Back Pack
Nikki Little would be one of those unassumingly FASHION girls who wears a lot of APC and ACNE and would buy Comme Des Garcons socks.
.
Rhonda (Hey Arnold)
Marc Jacobs Flats, Isabel Marant Jumper, J Brand Jeans
Rhonda would be one of those girls who always looks polished, her shoes are never scuffed, jumper never bobbled, jeans never faded. Yeah, one of THOSE.
.
Debbie (Wild Thornberrys)
Topshop Shirt and Crop top, Levis Jeans, Doc Martens
Debbie would most deff live in Brooklyn and would most def be the coolest girl on the block.
.
Spinelli (Recess)
Topshop Dress, Rag and Bone Jacket, Happy Socks, H by Hudson Boots, Need Supply Co Beanie, Marc by Marc Hair Ties.
Spinelli is that girl you see walking down K Road smoking a cigarette and not giving two fucks about anything especially other people.
.
Courtney Gripling (As Told By Ginger)
Gucci Shirt, J Crew Cashmere Sweater, Ralph Lauren Knit Jacket and Skirt, The Row Sunglasses, Alexander McQueen Boots.
Courtney’s entire wardrobe would be purchased on Netaporter / on her regular shopping trips to Paris/NYC/London. She has an entire wardrobe for cashmere alone.
.
The Cool Kids (The Weekenders)
Saint Laurent Jacket, A Wang Top, Givenchy Chocker, Opaque tights, Linda Farrow Sunglasses, Vintage Skirt, Ash boots.
She would definitely be the daughter of artists, the kind of girl who doesn’t say much but when she does it’s all about obscure artists and bands and how mainstream culture is killing us all.
.
Judy Funnie (Doug)
Zara Dress, Celine Polo, Cashmere Beret, J Brand Jeans, Ray-Bans, Gucci Boots.
Judy would totally be a Celine fan. She loves all things minimalist and contemporary and goes to film festival films on the reg. Her best friend is Charlotte Gainsbourg.
